Dont take it personally

I read this portion in a book titled. “Deepening your conversation with God”

HE WAS A SEASONED VETERAN of the Christian ministry, my first boss in the church, a respected mentor, and a dear friend. I had asked him what he had to say to younger pastors like me as he approached his retirement. It was one of those what-would-you-do-if-you-had-it-to-do-over-again questions. His answer came quickly: “Don’t take it personally.”
“Don’t take what personally?” was my next question. He told me not to take it personally when things get tough in the church, when I am attacked or tired or depressed. Things like that go with the territory. We’re in a spiritual battle. When a soldier is shot at, he isn’t shocked. His feelings aren’t hurt. He doesn’t peer over his foxhole at his adversary and shout, “Was it something I said?” He expects it, he plans on it.Brendon Wilson
That’s spiritual realism. That’s what impelled Paul to write the Ephesians that “our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms” (Eph. 6:12). Note that the apostle assumes his readers already know that the work of the kingdom is a struggle. He doesn’t need to argue the point. The question is not whether we’re in a battle, but what kind. The battle is spiritual. So we don’t take it personally, we don’t get hurt feelings when things get hard. We are spiritual realists.

WOW…….if more of us leaders, volunteers, ministers or whatever your title in the church may be could get a grasp of this…..our churches would be so much healthier. I have to admit……..I struggle with this……I will be the first to put up my hand and say that I take a lot of things personally but then again – who does not…….it is just human to take it personally especially when you have invested time, resources and a lot of emotional energy.

As I read this article I asked myself what are THREE ways that I can apply the “Don’t Take It Personal” rule in my life. Here are mine and I would love to have yours…..

  • The project, person, ministry, relationship, title or whatever is NOT MINE to begin with….it is God’s
  • Ed Young and Pace Hartfield always say…… YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU DON’T KNOW….. I love that as it is so true.
  • When I worked for Youth For Christ in South Africa we were taught ….. “what is the need behind the deed” ….. that helped a lot too!

Ok….. so those are mine and I would love to hear about yours….. what helps you from taking things personally in ministry or event the work place…..let us know.

Casa Grande, Multi-Site Church Launch for Christ Life Church

Over the next few weeks I will be posting everything that we are learning from our first church launch (if wonder why the word launch? then you need to read Nelson Searcy’s book “launch”)

Our Christ Life Church, Casa Grande location is just three weeks old and we have learn’t a tremendous amount. …. of what to do and what not to do. I will post about the weeks and months leading up to it, the equipment we purchased and did not purchase, volunteers that were raised up, fund-raising and so much more.

Probably the best site with the greatest resources right now that we took a lot away from is Leading Multi Site with Mac Lake

Highlands Church :: UpClose Round Table

Thursday and Friday of this week was spent at Church of the Highlands in  Birmingham, Alabama (first time there)

Phil Goldsberry, Chad Haymon and myself headed out on Southwest airlines  to spend a one and a half days with Chris Hodges and his team at Church of the Highlands. This round table was limited to 30 Senior/Lead Pastors and thier lead team…..about 50ish of us in total.

My expectations for the trip were pretty high – to learn and absorb as much as possible while we were there. I was ready to stand in fron of the fire hydrant and drink it all in.

Chris Hodges launched….I love the word launch rather they plant a church. If you dont know why we use this work read Nelson Searcy’s book called LAUNCH (great book)  …. anyway – he launched his church in 2000 and while we were there the church was around 12000 people with then starting thier 6 multi-site campus in three weeks. ….. WOW. A church that is 9 years old and running 12000+ people …. you have to admit that that is pretty spectacular!

The premise of the round table discussion was to get upcolse with the values and DNA of Highland Church. To read more of the history of the church go here.

If I had to take the 10+ hrs that we spent there and put it into four statements it would be that Church of the Highlands beleives in 1: The weekend Service 2:Growth Track (Membership and Spiritual Gift/Ministry Profile – I have blogged about how Christ Life Church does it here) 3: Small Groups 4: Dream Team (Volunteers)

Hopefully over the week I will spend some time on my blog debriefing how and why they do what they do – it is an incredibly simple proccess that I beleive has allowed them to remain a warship is the Kingdom battle that we are in and not a cruise ship that most churches have become.

Lastly – we go stuck at the airport so we had three hours to debrief our trip as we waited for our plane to arrive.

John Maxwell

Our church office is closed today because they are re-sealing the parking lot……..with that I am hitting the to-do list hard from the house.

ANYWAY…..back to John Maxwell….this guy has truly influenced my life! As a part of my morning devotions I am reading his “daily inspirations for leaders” and it dawned on me how many of his books that I have read and how much it has formed my thinking. I truly do not think that I would have the wisdom I do without so much of his writing. John Maxwell is truly a leader in our culture.

QUESTION:: How many of his books have you read?

Also- if you have not read any of his books…….why not?

WHEN CHURCHES GET STUCK

1:: Risk everything – question to ask – what have you risked lately??? Personally this is a great question to ask?

2:: Reach Everywhere – is your church in the news – it should be

3:: Release everyone — let go and let your people run with it.
– churches need to be more organic and less structured

4:: RETURN TO GOD
– enough said with this
