Empty Promises: The Truth About You, Your Desires, and the Lies You’re Believing by Pete Wilson

A few weeks ago Pete Wilson spoke at Christ Life Church about his book, Plan B which we used as a LIFE|Group study during our Winter semester. Today his new book, Empty Promises: The Truth About You, Your Desires, and the Lies You’re Believing releases nationally and he had this to say on his blog, withoutwax.tv .

Today is a BIG day as over a year’s worth of work is finally coming to fruition and my second book, Empty Promises: The Truth About You, Your Desires, and the Lies You’re Believing, is releasing nationally.

This book is incredibly important to me because I think one of the biggest problems in Christianity today is that we mainly focus on “sin management.” We want to edit behaviors instead of change hearts, but I think Jesus made it clear that he wasn’t interested in us spending our time trying to perfect external Christianity.

We want to pretend like God just wants to rearrange a little furniture in the house or maybe dust it up a bit. But if you look out the window there’s God with a wrecking ball. You see the issues we face in our life go down to the very foundation.

Sure we can tell you…don’t be greedy, don’t be self preoccupied, don’t be sexually promiscuous, don’t be power hungry, don’t be addicted to approval. But what if we asked what it is about your heart that makes you want to chase after those things?

This book is not just about sin. It’s about the sin beneath the sin. It’s about what’s fundamentally broken in the human heart and how all of that can be healed in and through the person of Jesus.

There’s two ways you could really help Pete Wilson today:

1)  Get a copy of Empty Promises at your local bookstore or order it online today!

2) Tweet, retweet, blog, post something on facebook with a link, or stand on top of a really tall building and yell how much you love  “Empty Promises.”

Learn this lesson to thrive or sink [gossip]

Learn this lesson to thrive or don’t and let it sink you

Proverbs 18:8 – “The words of gossip are like choice morsels; they go down to a man’s inmost parts.”

This year marks 16 years of being in ministry and I can honestly say that gossip is one of those small foxes that destroy the vineyard.

I have had the privilege of living in nearly every Southern African country, traveled extensively in the US and been a part of some amazing churches……… with that being said I have also seen how gossip has ripped through people’s lives and torn apart relationships. The sad aspect of this is that I don’t see it getting better and it is not something that is talked about much.

Recently, Christ Life Church hosted the Dave Ramsey, Momentum workshop. Chris LoCurto taught a session on the fundamental values of the Dave Ramsey organization – one of the values is a tenacious drive to squash all gossip I WISH the church in general could get its head around this ….. or rather …. if we are Biblical here …. it’s body [You might get that later].

I love that TENACIOUS DRIVE TO SQUASH ALL GOSSIP. [UPDATE: Just read on Chris blog that he just posted on gossip]

GET THIS – the scripture in Proverbs 18:8 tells us that gossip is like a tender morsel …. fine steak, chocolate covered strawberry or add you line here ___________. Get the point …… IF YOU LISTEN TO GOSSIP …. it will take ROOT in your life. Once gossip gets a ROOT it is very difficult to get it out. In fact, often times doubt, negativity, suspicion and more sets in. Here is the sad part ……. the probability is high that when you ‘heard’ or ‘took’ in the gossip you never took the time to actually clarify that the gossip was either true or not.

ACTION POINTS:

  • If someone starts to gossip – just leave. This takes some discipline as we tend to enjoy the gossip
  • If the gossip has to do with someone in authority …. be extra careful to stay away from this person as there could be a deeper issue here.
  • Avoid the ‘holy prayer gossip’ like to plague ….. Oh Lord, we pray for sister so and so …. you know she is in a terrible ________ add gossip here.
  • I am a big believer in ‘time’. Time will truly tell the intentions of the person ….. if the gossip was just ignorance or if this person truly has a deeper issue.
  • Consider gossip talking negative about someone and they are not right in front of you.
  • If you feel you have a tendency to lean towards gossip  - get an accountability partner and have them pray for you. Also ask the question of why you feel you need to talk down about people. You might find you have some unresolved issue’s from the past.

Over the last year I have become very passionate about helping people best this issue of gossip and in fact a cancer that is tearing down churches and organizations. Lets agree together as the scripture says, Ephesians 4:29 Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. …….if you keep on reading the next verse talks about grieving the Holy Spirit …… maybe the conclusion would be that our negative talk not only hurts people but also grieves the Holy Spirit or maybe a better word would be ‘saddens’ the Holy Spirit.

Ok – enough of me, I want to hear from you on this issue. I do you fight it in your own life and what are some tactics that you use to destroy gossip in and around you.

Flipboard plus iPad equals 2nd screen for SuperBowl

Are you a football stats nut or a triva geek? Have an iPad or iPhone …. then this is the app for you – Flipboard

Flipboard is one of my top apps for browsing my news, blog, magazine and social media feeds.

TODAY – they have a special Super Bowl XLVI (Giants vs Patriots) section with all the stats and trivia you need during the game

So download the Flipboard app from the iTunes application store here and set up your Super Bowl feed and you are good to go.

Flipboard had this to say about the Superbowl feed they have prepared:

Sunday’s Super Bowl promises to be an epic re-match between the New England Patriots and the New York Giants—the first Super Bowl rematch since 1994. And even if it’s not epic, the ads will be, plus Madonna is slated to play the half-time show. It’s the most popular televised event in the world, which probably has nothing to do with the GoDaddy ads.

Follow along by adding our Super Bowl section to your Flipboard. We’ll be filling it up with insightful analysis about the game, Super Bowl recipes, classic commercials, photo galleries, chest thumping and more. Find it by opening your Flipboard and tapping on the red ribbon. Source: http://inside.flipboard.com

I am always looking for good news feed applications for my iPhone & iPad – I would love your suggestions in the comment section.

Date Night Tip # 4 – Four Strategic Ways to Get The Heart of Your Spouse in 2012

Date Night Tip #4 – Four Strategic Ways to Get Your Spouse Heart in 2012 will be in the books for 2011. As we wind down 2011 and we have a natural momentum for 2012 which can help many of us invest in our marriages for 2012.

*** Quick waver here …. if your marriage is a wreck then this is a start but you need more help … please contact me so I can point you in the right direction.

I am naturally a systems and planning guy, I am addicted to Evernote as a way to keep my life moving forward with working for a church full-time and also being the creative principle of a Design Agency. With all of this in mind I like to plan out ahead …. way ahead sometimes and this has been a great help in my marriage as for most of it I have been pretty intentional about dating my wife every other week, taking breaks to get away from the kids and a number of other things that I will develop as long as I continue to write these tips.

So For 2012 Here Is What You Can Do …. Date Night

  • Write a list of 4 intentional ways to WOW your spouse in 2012  (365 days is a long time so spread it out)

Check out this post for ideas – or search ‘date ideas’ or ‘date night’ on google

You might want to write more but stick with 4 for now ….. if you pull them off then you can work on some more.

  • This can be as simple as a date night or a Weekend to Remember with Family Life
  • Find a friend that can hold you accountable for this (I can help if need be) Email them the list with the dates that you have set
  • Take care of child care ahead of time for your date night
  • Put it in your calendar [Hope you use one - if not get started with this basic productivity tip]
Big Waver Again … great subject title but marriage and relationships are hard work so get to it and start working.

VisualThesaurus.com is a site that I have followed for a number of years and continually wish that I would have used it more

VisualThesaurus.com  is an interactive dictionary and thesaurus which creates word maps that blossom with meanings and branch to related words. Its innovative display encourages exploration and learning. You’ll understand language in a powerful new way.

With my commitment through Michael Hyatt’s LIFE PLAN I have laid down the challenge to get blogging again and with that is a need to brush up on my language skills.

Say you have a meaning in mind, like “happy.” The VT helps you find related words, from “cheerful” to “euphoric.” The best part is the VT works like your brain, not a paper-bound book. You’ll want to explore just to see what might happen. You’ll discover — and learn — naturally and intuitively. You’ll find the right word, write more descriptively, free associate — and gain a more precise understanding of the English language.

Breakthrough Equation

Equation for breakthrough – I saw this equation on a site the other day and I had quit the mental response this this image so I thought that I would share it

I love the Equation: Breakthrough needs the following to make sense:

  1. People must think that I am crazy – have you ever felt like this before prior to your breakthrough
  2. I am going to figure this out – I love the tenacity of that statement ….. Have you been there before just as you reached your breakthrough
  3. LOVE THIS – I wont stop until I am done …. I will achieve my breakthrough
It has been said that most people fail because they give up to soon.
If there is one encouragement that you take away from this is that YOU CAN DO IT – DO NOT GIVE UP.
